Golden Rules
A. Each competitor must wear: full body cover (unless otherwise specified); identity bibs (supplied) and recognised studded shoes. Cycle helmets must be worn during the bike stages. Full body wind proofs; head torch and whistle; must be carried at all times.
B. Each team must carry at all times: A total of two maps - 2 - Sheet 78 maps (the O.S. 1:50,000 Discovery Series). 2 compasses; First Aid Kit (full roll of 2" crepe bandage, sterile dressings; steri strips); water bottle; small carrying rucksack(s).
C. Other than GPSs no additional specialist technical equipment can be carried, e.g mobile phones.
D. Team members must stay together for all stages max 50m separation - (penalty 15 min per offence), if splitting of team is allowed it will be advised.
Organisational Rules
1. By entering the event all competitors are deemed to have read and understood the rules and agree to abide by them.
2. The competition is a team event, made up of different stages, including land based, water based and initiative type activities.
3. Teams are made up of four competitors, categorised into three classes: - all female; all male and mixed teams. Mixed teams can be of any make up and will be classified equally irrespective of their composition. Classes may be amalgamated.
4. The winning team is determined by the lowest cumulative time over all the Stages of the National Adventure Marathon.
5. If any team or team member abandons a stage for any reason, the team is penalised by 2 hours, in addition to the maximum time recorded for that stage. The abandoning team may take part in subsequent stages.
6. No substitutes are allowed.
7. Specific briefing notes and/or route cards will be issued as required; these will include any specific rules or advice for a particular stage.
8. A control card(s) and / or dibbers will be issued where required. Loss, damage or non-surrender will result in a penalty of maximum finishing time of that stage plus 30 min.
9. Teams starting order is at discretion of controller.
10. Change of a teams designated starting times will not be permitted.
11. A team or team member will be refused a start if on medical or if the golden rules are broken.
12. A team late for their start will be started at the starter’s discretion, but the official start time will apply.
13. Max late start is 10 min after last team
14. Start times of each stage will be posted up in ample time, with consideration being given to rest, changing, food, weather etc.,
15. Each stage will have a cut off time, Rule 5 will apply to teams exceeding this time. Marshalls may impose a mandatory route or transport on teams liable to exceed the cut off time, in order to facilitate the starting of the next stage. Again the penalty under Rule 5 will apply.
16. Out of bounds will be clearly marked on a master map and advised on individual briefing notes/route cards. A penalty of 2 hours will be added for each infringement.
17. Each stage will contain a number of "check points" all compulsory and all team members to be present.
18. Throughout the event the following is Prohibited littering, excessive noise, use of whistle (except in emergency). A penalty of 15 min. per offence will be added.
19. Each participant must submit the doctor’s clearance certificate with their application.
20. Each competitor takes part at his/her own risk, each competitor must exercise appropriate care for himself / herself and be conscious of likely use of routes by members of the public and take care accordingly.
21. In the event of an accident it is the responsibility of the team.
- a) for some members to stay with the victim;
- b) for some members to travel for help;
- c) other teams to give help if requested.
- d) (Rule 5 will apply to the victim’s team)
- e) Time will be credited to teams who are requested to assist others in difficulty.
22. Any team retiring from a stage must advise a course official immediately.
23. Any appeals must be submitted in writing to a course official. The organiser's decision will be final.
24. During the cycle stages bikes must be either wheeled or carried on all off track sections.
These rules are subject to review by the organising committee. Notification of any changes will be brought to the attention of registered competitors.
